Curriculum Intent
Our music curriculum is first and foremost to help children to feel that they are musical, and to develop a lifelong love of music. We focus on the skills , knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident performers, composers and listeners. We endeavour for the children to listen and appraise music from all around the world. Children will develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments and listening and responding to music.
Through music, our curriculum aims to allow children to develop transferrable skills such as descision-making, creative thinking and teamwork. At Abbey, we believe in the power that music has to provide emotional wellbeing and an opportunity to esacpe everyday stress. Students will also be able to express themselves musically. These skills are pivotal to children’s development as learners and have a wider application beyond school.
Curriculum Implementation
At Abbey, we use the ‘Charanga’ scheme of work which follows the new Model Music Curriculum and meets all of the requirements of the statutory National Curriculum for Music, which also allows less confident teachers to access and provide high quality music education.
Following the scheme of work allows for clear development of the fundamentals of Music, providing lessons in Autumn to focus on these fundamentals and then building on these skills sequentially throughout the scheme in a spiral curriculum, where the fundamentals are regularly revisited. In each lesson, children listen, sing/play, and perform. At the end of a unit, there is an assessment checkpoint.
Teachers follow Charanga planning which allows for the development of self confidence in their own teaching and subject knowledge which is then reflected in the learning of the pupils. In each lesson, pupils will actively participate, whether that be with tuned or untuned instruments, to develop their understanding of how music works and their own musical skils.
Memorable moments are created through trips and visitors e.g. Young Voices 2023, Y4 whole class ensemble tuition, Y5 guitar taster sessions, Rocksteady, Carol Concert, Summer Concert.
Curriculum Impact
Our music curriculum is constantly monitored through both formative and summative assessment oppourtunities. Each lesson has guidance on how to support teachers in assessing pupils progress.
By the end of KS2, the children:

Are confident in the areas of listening, composing and performing and are able to express themselves musically.

Show appreciation for a wide range of music genres and will understand how music is influenced by the wider world and culture to which it is developed.

Will learn to sing and use their voices and understand how to produce music including the fundamentals of pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and notation.

Will be confident to play in solo and ensemble contexts.

Will use musical staff and other musical notations.

Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.
Overall, these skills that the students will obtain will benfit them both in education and in the wider world.
