NICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA)

At Abbey Primary School, we are proud to be a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and to have achieved the Silver: Rights Aware Award as part of the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA). This recognition celebrates our commitment to placing children's rights at the heart of school life and ensuring that every child feels valued, respected and heard.

What is the RRSA?

The UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award aims to promote and protect the rights of all children, ensuring they feel safe, are respected, and have every opportunity to thrive, grow and succeed. A Rights Respecting School teaches about children's rights and embeds these rights in everything it does, from classroom teaching and relationships to leadership, behaviour and school ethos.

At Abbey Primary School, we believe that when children understand their rights, they become more confident, responsible and active citizens, both within our school community and in the wider world.

Our Rights Respecting Journey

Achieving the Silver: Rights Aware Award is an important milestone in our Rights Respecting journey. It recognises the progress we have made in embedding children's rights across our school and demonstrates that children, staff and the wider school community have a growing understanding of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

As a Silver Rights Respecting School, we have:

  • Embedded the teaching of children's rights throughout our curriculum.
  • Developed a culture where pupil voice is valued and children are encouraged to express their views and opinions (Article 12).
  • Promoted rights-respecting language and values through assemblies, classroom discussions and school-wide initiatives.
  • Provided opportunities for children to take an active role in school life through leadership roles, pupil voice groups and community projects.
  • Created an environment where respect, dignity, inclusion and fairness are central to everything we do.

Through this work, our pupils are developing the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become compassionate, respectful and responsible members of society.

Working Towards Gold

While we are proud of our Silver Award, we are committed to continuing our Rights Respecting journey and are now working towards the Gold: Rights Respecting Award.

To achieve Gold, we will continue to:

  • Further embed children's rights across all aspects of school life and decision-making.
  • Strengthen partnerships with parents, carers and the wider community to promote children's rights.
  • Ensure that children take an active role in shaping their education and school environment.
  • Provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to advocate for the rights of others locally, nationally and globally.
  • Demonstrate that children's rights are fully embedded within our policies, practice and school culture.

Our Commitment

At Abbey Primary School, we are committed to creating a school community where every child feels safe, respected and empowered to achieve their full potential. By placing children's rights at the heart of everything we do, we help our pupils develop the confidence, empathy and understanding needed to make a positive difference in the world.

We are incredibly proud of our Silver: Rights Aware Award and look forward to continuing our journey towards becoming a Gold Rights Respecting School.
