Educational visits and workshops are carefully planned in each year group to enhance and deepen the pupils’ understanding of the curriculum. We recognise that there are some experiences that all pupils should have had by the time they leave primary school, such as visiting the farm and the seaside. Here at Abbey, we are committed to providing opportunities to enrich pupils' lives and develop their cultural capital. Our enrichment curriculum not only builds on our social, moral, spiritual and cultural offer but supports pupils in becoming empowered citizens who have the ability to engage positively in society. A central part of our vision is that we aim to inspire caring, compassionate and empathetic children ready to face life’s challenges and understand global issues. 

The staff and pupils at Abbey, organise a number of activities across the year supporting a range of local, national and international charities. House Captains and School Councillors play a vital role in listening to pupils’ ideas, selecting charities and sharing ideas for fundraising events.  

• Harvest Festival – food donations for Sutton Food Bank 

• Poppy Appeal – We raise money in support of the Royal British Legion appeal through the sale of poppies 

• World Mental Health Day – children learn about the importance of looking after their mental health and wear mufti for a donation.  

In addition to our regular fund-raising events, we have non-uniform days to raise money for various charities. As well as other events that the children decide on each year. 

Penny Challenge 2026

In April 2026, pupils at Abbey Primary School took part in a penny challenge. Each house team brought in loose change to create a penny chain on the floor, the longest chain were the winning team! Staff and pupil House Captains got together to choose which charity each house would raise money for. The charities were as follows: 

• Air House – Dogs for Good 

• Earth House – Ronald McDonald House Charity 

• Fire House – Guide Dogs UK 

• Water House – The Aspinall Foundation 

To develop pupils’ personal development, behaviour and skills, we offer a wide range of clubs run by teachers, support staff and outside providers. 

• Rocksteady – run by an external provider, pupils have the opportunity to join a band whilst learning to play the drums, guitar, keyboard or developing their vocal skills. Pupils then participate in performances to parents.  

• Piano Fun Club – run by an external provider, pupils have the opportunity to sign up for individual or paired piano or violin lessons.  

• Clubs – each half-term, pupils have the opportunity to sign up for a range of lunchtime and after-school clubs run by both staff and external providers. Click the link to see our current club offer.

At Abbey, we recognise the importance of giving pupils leadership responsibilities which enable pupils to develop confidence, responsibility and resilience while strengthening their communication, teamwork and decision-making skills. By taking on leadership roles, pupils learn how to make a positive contribution to their school community, preparing them to become responsible and active citizens in the future.
