OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Programme

At Abbey Primary School, we are proud to be developing our playtimes through the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach. We recognise play as a vital part of children’s development and plan for it with the same care and purpose as other areas of learning. Our aim is to ensure playtimes are inclusive, active, creative and led by children’s interests.

Our OPAL provision is guided by a committed leadership and support team that includes Mrs Sterling‑Williams, Headteacher; Miss Walker, Curricular Lead for Play; Mrs Delgado, Play Co‑ordinator; Mr Tanner, Governor Play Champion; and Alesha, Parent Play Champion. They are supported by our amazing, friendly and fun play team—staff who are just as excited as the children about the positive changes we are making to lunchtimes. Together, this team works to create a safe, inclusive and inspiring play environment where all children feel confident to explore, collaborate and take positive risks.

The roles of Play Rangers and Eco Helpers have also been set in motion. These pupil leadership roles give children the opportunity to take responsibility during playtimes by supporting others, helping to care for equipment and looking after our school grounds. By working alongside staff, Play Rangers and Eco Helpers promote positive play, respect for shared spaces and environmental responsibility.

The OPAL ethos encourages play that is freely chosen and directed by the child. A key element of this approach is the use of ‘loose parts’—open‑ended resources that can be moved, adapted and used in many different ways. These resources support imagination, creativity, collaboration and problem‑solving.

Children are encouraged to make full use of our varied school grounds, including the KS1 playground, KS2 playground, field, digging area, sandpit and quad area. These spaces provide rich opportunities for a wide range of play experiences, from energetic physical play to quieter, creative and imaginative activities.

As the colder and wetter months approach, a welly shed will be in place so that children can continue to access our outdoor and grassed areas safely and comfortably. This ensures that all pupils can benefit from high‑quality outdoor play throughout the year, whatever the weather.
