Geography

Curriculum Intent

Our children will learn to think and act like responsible geographers with a clear understanding of their place in our world. We do this by equipping our children to organise and connect information and ideas about diverse people, places, and environments. Our carefully designed and sequential curriculum will inspire our children’s curiosity and fascination about our world and the people in it. We nurture our pupils’ thirst for knowledge of the diverse physical and human world we inhabit and scaffold their understanding of the interaction between the processes therein. Geography is an investigative subject; thus our curriculum encourages children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research. They will understand, describe and appreciate the world whilst also being able to discuss and debate issues on a local, national and global scale. We will encourage fieldwork to allow our pupils to be given the opportunity to develop skills in observing, collecting, analysing, evaluating and communicating geographical information.

Curriculum Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is designed so that our children start with themselves and their local school and local areas before broadening out to wider places in the UK and across the world. In the Early Years, our children begin to develop their locational knowledge and spatial thinking through learning about positioning (e.g. near and far, left and right, in front and behind). These early building blocks are fundamental to our children’s future Geography learning.

Each strand of Geography; locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical processes, and geographical skills, is covered throughout the curriculum from Year 1-6. Each lesson has a clear learning intention in the form of a perceptive question and at the beginning of each new lesson, children complete a retrieval activity to review their prior learning from the unit so far in order to create stronger schema. Our repeated practice of geographical skills throughout their school life, improves children’s fluency and accuracy. Each unit of study is paired with a knowledge organiser which details some of the core concepts, key questions and vocabulary.

Children use a range of different resources e.g. maps, globes, photographs, graphs and diagrams, and where possible, we utilise opportunities for fieldwork to take place to fully immerse our children in their learning, as we believe hands-on experience contextualises their learning and creates memorable moments. Our Geography and History schemes of work link effectively each other to enable our children to embed their key knowledge in different contexts. The Humanities subject leaders work closely together and support teachers with planning, teaching and assessing Humanities, as well as monitoring standards and reviewing units taught.

Curriculum Impact

Our children will leave in Year 6 with an understanding of their own identity, sense of place and have developed an appreciation of interconnectedness of the world they live in. Our children will leave with the skills needed to explore, navigate and understand the world around them and the knowledge and understanding to enthusiastically continue their geography learning journey.
