Abbey Primary School is an academy and part of the Willow Learning Trust. The admission of pupils is controlled and administered by the Governing Body.
Admissions for Entry into Reception
Abbey Primary School is part of the Pan London Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme for Primary Admissions. Applications must be made through the London Borough of Sutton during the period 1st September to 15th January in the year before the child is due to start. Attendance in the Nursery does not give priority for a place in Reception, therefore a separate application must be made by parents wishing to apply for a place in Reception. If you wish to apply for a place at Abbey Primary School, you must name the school as one of your preferences on the application form.
Abbey Primary School has 60 places available in Reception. Included within this figure are children with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) which names Abbey Primary School, who will be allocated a place before other applicants are considered.
Order of Priority/Over-Subscription
Where applications for admission exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied in the following order of priority:
Priority 1: Looked After and Previously Looked After Children
Priority 2: Children with exceptional medical or social reasons for attending Abbey Primary School
Priority 3: Children of permanent staff employed by Abbey Primary School
Priority 4: Children with a sibling at Abbey Primary School
Priority 5: Children living in proximity to Abbey Primary School
Please read the Admissions Policy for full details of the order of priority/over-subscription criteria and other important information regarding admissions. The Admissions Policy can be found using the link below.
The Nursery Admissions criteria is laid out in the Admissions Policy and admissions are controlled and administered directly by the Governing Body. There are 52 places available in the Nursery and children will be eligible for consideration for entry following the date of their third birthday. There are 21 places available in the morning and afternoon sessions and there are a further 10 places available for parents/carers wishing to apply for the 30 hours extended entitlement. Parents/carers can specify their preferred sessions on the application form, but please note that the school cannot guarantee your preference. Applications to the Nursery must be made to Mrs Bedford at Glenthorne High School and children are generally admitted in the Autumn or Spring Term before their fourth birthday and usually receive three terms of nursery education prior to starting full time schooling.
In the event of the Nursery being over-subscribed, applications for admissions will be ranked in the same way as for children applying for a Reception place (see above). Children applying for Nursery who are not offered a place will automatically be added to the waiting list which will be reviewed regularly.
The link to the Nursery Application Form can be found below.
Mid-Year Applications and Waiting Lists
If you are looking for a place for your child during the school year, you will need to complete the Mid-Term Admission to Primary School Application form which is available from the London Borough of Sutton. If there are no places available in the year group you are applying for, your child will be placed on the waiting list for that year group. All waiting lists will be maintained according to the order priority/over-subscription criteria above and will be reviewed regularly.
If you are not offered a place at Abbey Primary School, you have a statutory right of appeal under the School Standard & Framework Act 1998. If you wish to appeal, please write to Mrs Bedford to request the appeals forms and advice booklet.
