Year 2

Class Page

During the first half of the term, year 2 are very excited to be exploring another history topic- Florence Nightingale. We begun by looking at a painting of Florence Nightingale in Art Week and looking at sources and other paintings.  There we began to wonder why Florence Nightingale was so important. We recreated parts of the painting in Drama and acted out a mime to a poem we read about her. To celebrate the end of art week, we created our own versions of the painting using the freezes we created in Drama. They will look so professional in their frames! We’re very much looking forward to learning about the changes Florence made to Scutari Hospital and the impact these had on the soldiers fighting in the Crimea war and also on the hospitals we have today. Already the children can tell us so many facts about the famous ‘Lady with the Lamp’.  Later on in the topic we will also have the opportunity to make our own Florence Nightingale puppets using different fabrics and our sewing skills!

Summer 2 will see us study the Isle of Coll- a Geography topic! Here we will be putting all of our Geography skills to practise by looking at the features and the habitats of the Scottish island. Using maps, we will also plan our own route to the Island- what will be the best way to get there and what transport should we use? What will we see on the way?

We will also be reading Katie Morag, which are stories about a young girl who lives on a Scottish Island, one that is very similar to the Isle of Coll. We can’t wait to hear about Katie’s adventures and perhaps write a few of our own… We will also have the opportunity to create prints in Art of island designs which we will be able to print onto different fabrics creating a different effect each time.

Two fantastic topics to end a great year for Year 2!
