Abbey Primary School is taking part in WoW or Walk Once a Week.  WoW is a National Campaign to get children and their families walking regularly.

Every child who joins the scheme gets a certificate the first time they walk.  Everyone who walks at least once a week for the whole month receives a specially designed WoW enamel pin badge.

Each month the design changes, so you need to keep walking to keep collecting!

WoW is important for both our environment and us.  Walking Once a Week helps to:

  • Improve health! A brisk one-mile walk to school and back burns around 150 calories, adds about 2,000 steps to your daily total and helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, boosts the metabolism and burns fat.  And for the children, it sets up healthy habits for life!

  •  Teach road safety skills!  Almost 1 in 5 teenagers report having been involved in a road accident or near miss on the way home from school, and casualties in the under 16's peak at age 12.  Walking to school raises traffic awareness while children are still at primary school. Better traffic awareness gives kids more independence as they get older.

  • Increase learning!  Children who have taken exercise on the way to school arrive more ready to learn and concentrate.

  • Minimise congestion outside the school!  WoW helps us to show local residents that we take these problems seriously and are trying to actively address it.

  • Cut pollution! Cars not only produce pollution, but car users suffer up to 3 times as much pollution as pedestrians.

  • Save money!  Parents drive an average of 600 miles   annually to take their children to school and back, at an estimated cost of £300 a year.
