School Council

We are the School Council……

Abbey Primary School Council meets approximately once a half term on a Tuesday straight after school.  It is held in Purple Class and Miss Roberts is present.  The School Council comprises of 2 representatives from each KS2 class (one boy and one girl) and one from each KS1 class.

Class Council meetings are held to air any issues that pupils wish to talk about relevant to the school.  These can be ideas for improvements, fundraising ideas, Golden Time activities or anything else that is important to them.  These issues are then discussed and the list is narrowed down and brought to School Council.  At this stage Miss Tunstall or Mrs Bedforth try to be present to give representatives immediate answers to as many issues as possible.  Resolutions or further points for discussion are then taken back to Class Council.

The School Council played a large part in the voting of equipment for the Activity Trail and KS2 playground improvements, and made it possible for the pupils at Abbey to help choose Housepoint groups.

How do we choose our class representatives?

Firstly we have a secret vote. Each child in the class votes for a girl and a boy they want to be class councillor. All those that have two nominations have to give a speech on why they will be a good school councillor.

The class then vote on the pupil(s) they think are the best. Each KS2 class has two representatives and each KS1 class has one. Each class representative has a school council badge to wear on their uniform.

At our last meeting we discussed ....

Our last school council meeting was held on Tuesday 9th October where all the children representatives discussed the fact that too many sweets were being brought into school on children's birthdays which is not good for children's teeth.  The school representatives came up with suggestions to bring into school instead of sweets, like donating a book or toy for golden time, giving out balloons, pencils or pens.  We had a really good meeting and look forward to our next one.
