ABBEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

CHILD MEDIA POLICY

IMPORTANT LETTER – PLEASE READ AND RESPOND

Many parents have concerns about the use of photographs and other images of their children.  Providing the image of a pupil either in printed documents such as newspapers, school newsletters, website or video format allows for the possibility that people outside the school might identify and then contact or attempt to contact pupils directly.  For these reasons, Sutton’s Local Authority (LA) has introduced a Child Media Policy to make the publication of children’s images as safe as possible.

I am writing to ask your permission to publish images of your child in any of the following ways: newspapers, newsletters, web sites, or videos.  Your consent, if you agree, will be valid for one year.  After this time we will ask your permission again.  If you allow images of your child to be used they will be in compliance with the LA’s Child Media Policy that seeks to protect your child’s image from abuse.  The main points of the policy are as follows:

We will not:

Publish a child’s name at all with a photograph on our website.  This may occur in the local newspaper but we would always seek your permission first.

Use the image for anything other than school business.

Allow the use of the image by anybody outside the Sutton schools system.

Use unnecessary close-up pictures of individual children but will use general shots of classroom or group activities.

We will:

Ask you each year for your permission to use images.

Keep a record of your reply.

Ensure that the original images are only used by the school, LA or newspapers (see below) that comply with the Child Media Policy.

Publish photographs in school or in the media of children in clothing deemed appropriate and in context by the Headteacher and in line with our uniform policy.

Inform the press of your wishes not to have your child’s image published – but please note that in law our ability to control articles published by the press is very limited.

If you agree to the publication of your child’s images for school purposes, please let us know on the reply slip below.

If you would like more information before you decide, I will be happy to provide you with a full copy of Sutton’s Child Media Policy on request, alternatively it can be viewed or downloaded from the LA website at: www.suttonlea.org

I would be grateful if you could complete the attached form and send it into school.  If we do not receive a reply we will assume that you do not wish us to use your child’s image.

I hope that this new system will help reassure you and allow you to make your personal choice known to us.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this letter.

Yours sincerely

Louise Tunstall

Headteacher
